Ma, look what I found in the garden, our lime plant is sprouting kaffir lime leaves!
My mom gave me the "how can my daughter be so stupid, I must have brought the wrong baby home" look and told me that the plant is a lime and kaffir lime hybrid so it sprouts both lime and kaffir lime leaves. The kaffir lime leaves are the dark green glossy ones at the top of photograph with two leaves joined together in a figure 8 pattern. Lime leaves are the lighter green ones at the bottom.
Ok, so this lime kaffir lime plant is not a miracle of nature that I first thought it was but from the point of view of someone with no green fingers whatsoever, its still pretty amazing. Most importantly, I have fresh kaffir lime leaves and lime leaves whenever I need them. I wonder if there are hybrids for herbs? Top on my wish list will be a basil plant that sprouts both sweet basil and anise basil or a coriander and scallion hybrid. What will you like if such herb plants are possible?
