Can a Black Forest cake be called a Black Forest if it is not filled with cherries?
It was the Father's 57th birthday. Since nobody wanted to eat a cake baked by me, not even me, we bought a Black Forest cake from this bakery. We had bought other cakes from them in the past. The Mother liked that their cakes are light and airy in texture and not overly sweet in taste. She also preferred the simple and traditional cake design compared to the more outlandish ones of other bakeries.
Imagine our surprise came cake eating time. On first bite, everything seemed as per normal.
Chocolaty sponge cake, check.
Light whipped cream, check.
Chocolate shavings, check.
Sour cherries filling ... where's the cherries?
The Black Forest cake was filled with blueberries. In our many years of eating Black Forest cakes, we have never encountered a cake not filled with cherries until this one. I was particularly disappointed as sour cherries were my favourite. The original German name, Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte literally translates to Black Forest Cherry Cake. If the cake had other fillings, to call it a Black Forest would be, in my opinion, rather misleading.
On a cakes cake related note, I can barely fit into my skinny jeans so I am officially on diet ... right after I finish eating this last piece of blueberries filled Black Forest cake.
On a non-cake related note, check out what the Father bought himself for his birthday:
A pickup, oops I mean a sports utility truck. Though we still cannot comprehend why he wants a truck, the vehicle will be handy come durian season. Urghhh, stop thinking about food, you are on diet!
Happy Birthday ST's Daddy. Nice car:)

belated birthday to your dad! Nice pickup he got there. ;-)
And no, I dont consider a Black Forest cake a true black forest cake unless it has sour cherries in there. I can imagine your disappointment. I hate it when I got cheated. Er, thinking about it, the Black Forest Cakes I had in Brunei were in fact all filled out with canned fruits. *yikes* Your blueberry is so much better!
Do you realise that you think more about food when you are officially on a diet and probably probed you to eat more! That's what's happening to me atm >.<

Hi ST,
I would have returned the cake rather than finish it, especially since it wasn't what it claimed to be. But in any case, you're to be commended for making the best of the situation at hand.
BTW...Happy birthday to your Dad! I wish I had gotten myself a new truck for my birthday. Lucky guy!

Thanks umami. When the truck is here we can go buy durian together. Hehe.
Hi pinkcocoa, u are so right. I am cheating on my diet big time *blush*
Hi Mrs T, consumer rights are almost non exisitent in Singapore. I wish I can get my money back :(
Hi Reid, like I told Mrs T, I wish I can take the cake back. In the bakery's website, they do state that the filling is blueberries. Maybe if we had asked the staff before buying I would not feel so cheated. Then again the question seems like such a no brainer most would not have asked. The next time I buy from an unfamiliar bakery, I will definitely remember to ask.

infact, I feel that Singapore's black forest cake is a fraud as there is no alcohol to it...
