The first time I made a swiss roll, it cracked and I got screamed at by my secondary school home economics teacher. Haunted by the failure, or maybe I was still afraid of Mrs Yap I never attempt the cake again until last week at baking class where I had to make several swiss rolls including this one. Known as the tiger roll, this cake has tiger stripe like patterns on the skin. Or rather, you get tiger strips when executed well. I thought mine looked more like squiggly worms. Still, I was quite pleased as none of my swiss rolls cracked.
way to go ST! Your tiger roll looks fantastic, much better than mine.

That looks fantastic! Great job! How do you get the tiger-stripe design on the roll?
BTW, I've been in search of a recipe for Pandan Cheese Roll (the kind they sell at Bengawan Solo) and was wondering if you had any ideas for making the filling (and cake, too). Thanks!

Hi umami, you are too kind :)
Hi Lannie, the tiger strips are achieved by the use of starch instead of flour. I have never tasted the Bengawan Solo Pandan cheese roll so I do not have any idea on their cake recipe or the filling. However, from reading other recipes and what I gather from my teacher, for the roll to remain soft in the fridge or after a few days, it has to be a sponge/chiffon cake recipe. Hope this helps.

Hi ST,
Thanks for the suggestions. If it's not a conflict with your baking class, would it be possible to post the Tiger Roll recipe or something similar - I'd love to try to make it, too.
Hi Eliza,
If you don't mind, could you please post your pandan roll recipe? I'm always looking to add to my recipe collection.
Thanks! :-)

Mrs Yap, that wouldn't be Marymount would it? I remember a Mrs Yap and a Mrs Lau.

Thank you for a very interesting blog. I have never ever baked a cake before, but your mention of a pandan banana roll (I had an amazing piece of this many years ago) has motivated me to give it a try. Do you by any chance have the recipe for this cake?

Hi Lannie, the tiger roll recipe belongs to my teacher so it is really not very nice if I post it here.
Hi Hok, eliza is the one with the pandan banana roll recipe. Perhaps you can visit her lovely blog and ask her for the recipe. If not, the kuali site has several decent panda cake recipes.

Umami, I am not from Marymount but other than Mrs Yap, the other home econs teacher is called Mrs Lau!
